Senators send Flyers to ninth straight loss
Hockey Betting Lines
12/23/2006 - Philadelphia, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Daniel Alfredsson scored two of Ottawa's three goals in the third period, as the Senators continued Philadelphia's recent misery with a 6-3 victory over the Flyers at the Wachovia Center.
The Flyers have lost a franchise record nine in a row, including the last eight in regulation, and haven't won since November 30.
Alfredsson also notched an assist for the Senators, who snapped a two-game skid and won for only the third time in their last nine games. Joe Corvo, Chris Phillips, Denis Hamel and Peter Schaefer also scored in the victory, while Dany Heatley notched a pair of key assists.
Martin Gerber stopped 26 shots for the Senators, who played without leading scorer Jason Spezza. He is expected to be sidelined for at least a couple of weeks with a left knee injury.
Ben Eager, Jeff Carter and Kyle Calder scored for the Flyers, while Antero Niittymaki made 36 saves in defeat. Peter Forsberg missed his third straight game because of a concussion.
Alfredsson snapped a 3-3 tie at 8:25 of the third period with his eighth goal of the season thanks to a giveaway by Flyers defenseman Derian Hatcher. Heatley picked off a Hatcher clearing attempt deep in the Philadelphia zone and had a backhand shot stopped by Niittymaki, but Alfredsson was trailing the play and knocked the rebound home.
Schaefer then made it 5-3 on a power play with 7:31 remaining. Andrej Meszaros' pass from the left circle was deflected directly to Schaefer in the right circle and he had a wide open net to deposit his fifth goal, as a Flyer defender took another Ottawa player into Niittymaki in the crease.
The Flyers pulled Niittymaki in the final minute while on a power play and Alfredsson scored into the empty net to notch his 700th NHL point.
The Senators opened the scoring with a power-play goal from Corvo just over six minutes into the game. Alfredsson had the puck along the left boards and sent a cross-ice pass into the right circle for Corvo, who snuck in from the point and sent a shot through the five-hole.
Philadelphia tied it just over six minutes later when Eager knocked in the rebound of a Stefan Ruzicka shot for his second goal of the season and first since November 6.
Carter put the Flyers ahead with 2:32 left in the opening period. Kyle Calder won a battle for the puck behind the Ottawa net and sent a pass into the right circle for Carter, who snapped a shot past Gerber for his third goal of the year.
Gerber, despite, yielding two goals, turned aside the other 14 shots he faced as his teammates were outshot 16-7 in the first period.
The Senators turned the tables in the second period and outshot the Flyers 17-8. Niittymaki was brilliant through the first 12 1/2 minutes and turned aside all 14 Ottawa shots before the Senators scored on each of their next two chances.
Phillips tied it with 7:26 left in the period, taking a feed from Heatley behind the net and beating the netminder with a shot from the right circle for his third goal.
Ottawa went in front just 1:39 later, as a turnover in the neutral zone led to a 2-on-1 break and Hamel blasted a shot from above the left circle past Niittymaki on the blocker side for his fourth goal.
Gerber had to make a great save on a breakaway chance by Carter with 1:34 to play in the second, but the Flyers managed to tie it moments later when Calder directed a feed from Sami Kapanen in at the right post for his second goal.
Game Notes
Anton Volchenkov had two assists for Ottawa...The Senators were 2-for-5 on the power play, while the Flyers failed to cash in with five man-advantage opportunities...Philadelphia has lost six straight home games and hasn't won on home ice since November 24 against Columbus.

Super Bowl XLIV Odds
Super Bowl XLIII isn't even a week old yet and oddsmakers have already released Super Bowl XLIV odds.
Despite the Pittsburgh Steelers winning Super Bowl 43, the New England Patriots are 8/1 favorites to win Super Bowl 44.
Bet Super Bowl XLIV Future Odds
With their 27-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII, the Steelers became the latest NFL champion. But believe it or not, oddsmakers from online sports book MySportsbook.com don't have the Steelers the favorites to win Super Bowl XLIV next season.
That honor belongs to the New England Patriots, who are 8/1 favorites to win despite not even qualify for the postseason in 2008. The Pats also have a major decision to make regarding what to do with Matt Cassel, who played well in Tom Brady's (knee surgery) absence last year but is also a free agent this offseason.
Ironically, the Steelers aren't even oddsmakers second choice to win Super Bowl 44, as the Dallas Cowboys are listed right behind the Patriots at 9/1 despite not making the playoffs themselves. Clearly oddsmakers think the public will hop back on the Cowboys' bandwagon considering the immense talent they have and the opening of a brand new stadium.
After Dallas, then comes Pittsburgh at 10/1, but they share those odds with the New York Giants, who won Super Bowl XLII. The Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers round out the top six teams at 12/1, while the Baltimore Ravens (14/1), Tennessee Titans (16/1), Carolina Panthers (18/1) and Philadelphia Eagles (18/1) complete the top 10.
The NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals got no love from oddsmakers as they were established as a 30/1 long shot to win next year's Super Bowl. They share those same odds with the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers – two teams that didn't even qualify for the postseason. Other long shots are the Kansas City Chiefs (100/1), Detroit Lions (100/1), St. Louis Rams (75/1) and Oakland Raiders (75/1).
